The program helps participants gain real work experience and job training through projects directed by Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS). All participants will become knowledgeable about operating gas-powered weed whackers, mowers, hand saws, pruners, loppers, edgers, de-weeding devices and picks and acquire worker safety skills that are compliant with current Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. The work of the program consist of non-service alley vegetation control, debris removal in non-service alleys and vacant lots, and commercial strips cleaning.
To ensure the success of participants, Safer provides case management, vocational counseling, job readiness training, job placement assistance, supportive service coordination, on-going contact, intervention and monitoring of progress towards program requirements. Safer will combine real work activities, skill development, and supportive services to assist participants in overcoming substantial barriers to employment.
